Wood Metal
Wood Metal

Construction question? Whats the difference between using wood or metal for framing?
I've been watching some HGTV/DIY network and have seen mostly wood, but have seen metal frames used also. Is wood more preferred, while metal a cheaper option?
Just curious.
There is going to be a cost preference to use wood over steel frame construction long as the application is suitable for Wood Frame construction.

Tapped gently with the rubber-tipped mallet, this three-tone chime emits a soothing "voice" that relaxes and reenergizes. Useful for meditation and healing rituals, the chime can be struck in front of the body, then moved from one side of the head to the other for a surround-sound experience. Three polished aluminum rods of different lengths are fastened to a smooth, cherry-finished hardwood base that measures approximately 8 by 3 inches, small enough to keep on a desk or by the bed. Musician Gary Kvistad founded Woodstock Chimes in 1979, and today the family-owned company produces a wide range of handcrafted, precision-tuned chimes. A one-year warranty covers the chime against defects, and all tuned Woodstock Chimes come with a lifetime tuning guarantee. --Ann Bieri Sound has a huge impact on our environment and our spirit, yet it is often overlooked. I've Been Collecting Some Good Ones, Just So I Can Get Rid Of 'Em! Shhh, Don't Tell My Human! A cat's gotta stick up for himself sometimes. Now, i don't deny that after fourteen years of high living, the last few spent on the street (through no fault of my own), I was ready for regular meals and a little peace and quiet. So when this human picked me up in the alley after a most unfortunate meeting with a large canine, I let her patch me up and, well, the food was good, so... let's just say I never got around to leaving. Now the human thinks she's the boss. But let me tell you, I got this situation wired. I make with the goo goo eyes, and she can't get those pounce treats out fast enough. I sleep against her legs, (just for back support, mind you) and she's combing me and scratching those special spots on my chin and behind my ears. But lately - well, it seems like I'm losing my grip on this household! It's the little things. Little hard round things, actually. They're EVERYWHERE. They get stuck in my toes. I chased a bug across the floor the other day, and it turned out not to be a bug at all. I sat at the human's feet for half an hour last week, because I KNOW what a crackling plastic bag of tempting treats sounds like. Finally she let me sniff the little things and they were -- ugh! -- BEADS! Well, Mr. Kitty's got it all back in paw now. She thinks it's cute - she thinks I'm playing with the 'bugs'. But I know, and YOU know, that I am quietly gathering every single stupid bead I can hook claw or tooth into and putting them into MR. KITTY'S BIG BEAD BONANZA. Hey, she drops them, she looks away, whatever - they're MINE. I've been listening (she calls it napping) and I know that in my collection there are beads and findings from the USA, South America, Czechoslovakia, India, China, Korea and more. |

Instead of cartoon vignettes that chronicle adolescent fantasies of sex and drugs in the near future, this sequel to 1981's Heavy Metal follows but one story. On a distant planet, a fountain of eternal life has been locked away by a race of supposedly wise people, who have buried the only key deep in space. If found, the key will give directions to the planet, but will also drive the finder crazy--which is exactly what happens. On his way to the planet of youth, Tyler (voice of venerable character actor Michael Ironside) wipes out most of a space colony and kidnaps a sexy woman. His big mistake is that he doesn't kill the woman's sister, Julie (voice of B-movie actress Julie Strain), who then sets out on a mission of rescue and revenge. Created with an uneasy blend of computer and traditional cel animation, Heavy Metal 2000 is utterly predictable. Even the sex scenes are bland and politically correct, eschewing the joy of dirty sex in favor of glimpses of T&A and lots of violence and gore. Of course, one big reason for this movie is to supplement its heavy metal soundtrack, which includes Pantera, Monster Magnet, MDFMK, Insane Clown Posse, Billy Idol, and others. It's probably better to think of it more as a string of music videos than as a story. --Andy Spletzer |

The Tommyknockers is a TV miniseries based on Stephen King's 1987 novel. An alien spacecraft has been buried beneath the Burning Woods near the small rural New England community of Haven for millions of years, but has now by chance been unearthed by Bobbi (Marg Helgenberger) while digging around in the woods behind her house. The structure in the woods begins to exert a glowing-green influence on the town, causing the people to invent Rube Goldberg-like gizmos, develop the gift of telepathy, lose their teeth, and form a hive-mind mentality bent on digging up the ship and revivifying the desiccated aliens within. Luckily, Bobbi's significant other is an alcoholic poet (Jimmy Smits) who needs to learn to face his fears. He also has a metal plate in his head that prevents the hive-minders from reading his thoughts and makes him immune to the neon-green influence of the aliens. Ultimately, it's up to him to save the day. Although the acting is topnotch, especially from Smits and Helgenberger, and there are plenty of gooseflesh moments, there are also enough plot holes here to fuel a very long and enjoyable evening's conversation. Why do the aliens start in at this time, when they've been causing legends in the woods for ages? Where does an alien ship buried for ages get all that dry ice? How does the Smits character make a living as a poet? One suspects that King's fine sense of New England characterizations is given short shrift here, and that the woods in his mind teem with more alien thoughts than the TV miniseries form could embody. Welcome appearances by congenial actors abound, notably Joanna Cassidy, E.G. Marshall and Robert Carradine. And there's a slutty postal letter-carrier played authentically by Traci Lords. --Jim Gay The small town of Haven becomes a hot-bed of inventions all run by a strange green power device. The whole town is digging something up in the woods, and only an alcoholic poet can unfathom the secret of the tommyknockers.
