Bilingual Dora and her monkey friend Boots have places to go and rescues to make, but they need the help of their young viewers in this delightful Nick Jr. program designed to simulate computer software. Although it can't be truly interactive, of course, toddlers and preschoolers will enjoy the pauses as Dora waits for them to count or speak Spanish before moving on. In "Little Star," the brown-eyed heroine and her primate amigo come upon a weeping fallen star and make the journey to a hilltop, returning it to the heavens. In "Wizzle Wishes," the friends are reading a storybook when one of the characters leaps from the page in pursuit of three wishes. They must catch the runaway wishes in order to get Wizzle home, but first they have to deal with Swiper, the klepto fox who beat them to it. Children learn a simple Spanish word each 23-minute episode (salta and cuidado, respectively) as well as repeatedly hearing the basics (hola, muy bien). As with any computer game, Dora is aided and thwarted by a series of characters children will love to anticipate, including her singing anthropomorphic map, the crusty bridge troll, and the shy, Spanish-speaking squirrel. Ages 2 to 6. --Kimberly Heinrichs Dora and Boots wish upon a star. But in order to fulfill their wishes, they'll have to use their learning skills to help some new friends, Little Star and Wizzle, reach their destinations. 48 Minutes. |

Musical theater is a fun and exciting experience for preschoolers--especially when the stars are familiar characters like Dora, Boots, Diego, and the rest of the Dora the Explorer gang. In this double-length episode, Dora and her friends, including a new baby jaguar, are about to perform a musical play about pirates for an audience of friends and relatives. When the Pirate Pigs steal the treasure chest with all the costumes inside, Dora sets out to cross the seven seas and pass under the Singing Bridge in order to get to Treasure Island and retrieve the costumes. Dora and her friends sing lots of catchy songs as they overcome obstacles like fog, rocks, and waterfalls and catch some singing stars--all with the help of young viewers. Especially memorable are the silly renditions of classic children's songs like "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" as sung by the confused Singing Bridge--a guaranteed chuckle for viewers of all ages. Skills emphasized include Spanish vocabulary, singing, and counting to seven. (Ages 2 to 5) --Tami Horiuchi |

Join Dora and others on a journey to the Lost City, a mysterious, hidden place where all things go when they get lost! Along the way, you'll meet interesting characters, helping them find their lost objects, too. Dora the Explorer has lost her teddy bear! Osito is truly missing, and Dora and her friend Boots believe he has ended up--like all mislaid things--in the mysterious Lost City. Planning an expedition to find Osito becomes complicated, though, when it turns out that Dora is far from the only one missing a personal treasure. Mami Bugga Bugga has lost her children's baby blankets, for one thing, while Pirate Pig has misplaced his hat! Despite these revelations Dora is on her way soon enough, headed to the Lost City in search of a handful of wayward items. The path is not smooth, however. Obstacles like the Big Pond (where Pirate Pig's minions must be sorted into variously colored boats) and the Number Pyramid (a place for elementary math skills to get a workout) crop up along the route. These and other puzzles cry out to be solved... preferably before Dora continues on her way. Aimed solidly at players ages 3 and older, Dora the Explorer: Lost City Adventure is a simple game with a straightforward storyline and no unpleasant surprises. The flow of its educational subject matter is frequently broken with animations and songs, making it easier for young gamers to maintain a focus on learning. Its activities are the most basic of skill builders, easily mastered even at their highest levels of difficulty. Lost City Adventure also stimulates user interest by doling out a sprinkling of Spanish vocabulary through its animations, exposing players to a handful of easily learned words from Dora's mother tongue. As for Dora herself, her good-natured encouragement and enthusiasm for the quest to the Lost City are infectious, and children are certain to respond eagerly to every task she puts before them on the way to rescue Osito. --Alyx Dellamonica Dora's special teddy bear is lost. She and Boots post a sign, and then decide to take matters into their own hands. With her trusty map for guidance and help from kids, Dora and Boots journey to the Lost City, a mysterious, hidden place where all lost objects go. Along the way, they travel to exotic locations, encounter some of their friends--Pirate Pig, Mami Bugga Bugga, and more--and help them regain their lost objects, too. Throughout Dora the Explorer: Lost City Adventure kids play cool math-related games and learn a little Spanish, too. The game's two play modes--adventure and free play--diversify gameplay, while three adjustable difficulty levels keep the game challenging. Kids also search for hidden stars throughout the game and collect them in a very special star pouch. Plus, printable games and math activities let children take the learning fun with them wherever they go. |
