Down from the Mountain (The "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Concert) List Price: $14.98 Sale Price: $7.25 Used From: $5.94 Average Rating: ![]() |

If you love the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, D.A. Pennebaker, Chris Hegedus, and Nick Doob's exhilarating concert film Down from the Mountain will be sheer heaven. And if you're new to bluegrass and "old-time mountain-style" music, the performances (also on CD) will be a revelation. John Hartford, Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, the Cox family, the venerable Ralph Stanley, and other traditional and alt-country artists who contributed the music to the Coen brothers' spaced odyssey gathered onstage in May 2000 at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium to benefit the Country Music Hall of Fame. Interviews and rehearsal footage set the stage for this stupendous concert, highlights of which include "(Didn't Leave) Nobody but the Baby" by the sirens Harris, Welch, and Krauss; the Coxes' "(Will There Be) Any Stars in My Crown"; and Stanley's haunting "O Death." As one performer recommends, "Just ease in, sit down, and listen." It could be your salvation. --Donald Liebenson Presents a concert recorded live at the Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, Tenn., May 24, 2000. |

Recorded live at the Grand Ole Opry House in spring 2005, this double-disc set is in essence the companion to Wynonna's new autobiography, Coming Home to Myself, in that it canvasses her 20 years of recording, both as half of the Judds and on her own. While only the most rabid Judds fans will quibble about the absence of mother Naomi (other harmonizers take up the slack), some of the more important Judds hits (e.g., "Why Not Me") go missing in favor of obscure offerings or covers. As always in concert, Wynonna's impassioned vocals are so robust and powerful as to seem a force of nature (take cover, Three Little Pigs!), and she can imbue a sentimental song like Dave Loggins's "She Is His Only Need" with enough grit and gravity to make it dig deep down in the bones. Unfortunately, she infuses her between-song prattle with history lessons on her musical journey, which wear thin on repeated listenings, despite some deeply vulnerable confessions and good-natured humor. ("I'm trying to get back to my original weight: 8 pounds, 15 ounces.") She also fails to capture the frenetic randiness of Melissa Etheridge's "I'm the Only One," and though a serious student of Elvis, her excursions into Presleyana ("Burnin' Love," "Sometimes I Feel Like Elvis") seem more like parody than anything else. Worse, the bonus studio track, "Attitude," just sort of floats on by. On the upside, several songs rock harder and bluesier here than in their original versions, especially Mama Judd's blistering "That Was Yesterday," and "No One Else on Earth," which pushes its Bonnie Raitt-ish funk to the max. Bottom line: Mixed bag of material, but Wy's Ferrari of a voice will keep you glued to the speakers throughout. --Alanna Nash |

C.S.I. Crime Scene Investigation - The Complete Fourth Season List Price: $29.99 Sale Price: $14.99 Used From: $10.22 Average Rating: ![]() |
|
The nation's top-rated program got back to basics for its fourth season. The personal lives of the Las Vegas crime scene investigators would take more of a backseat to the stories themselves: the victims, the cases, the criminals. After a successful operation, William Peterson's Gil Grissom has regained his hearing--and his Manhunter-era beard--and is back in fighting form. "You're like your old self," Captain Brass (Paul Guilfoyle) notes in "All for Our Country." Just in time, as he'll soon be promoting one of his staff to lead CSI, and it's between Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) and Nick Stokes (George Eads). He also has a new politically minded sheriff with which to contend, Rory Atwater (24's Xander Berkeley). The latter will make his first of several appearances in "Invisible Evidence," while the results of Grissom's lead CSI decision will be revealed in "No More Bets." That said, one CSI will enjoy a bit of a personal life this season--Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger), who'll begin seeing nightclub owner Chris Bezich (Nicholas Lea, Krycek from The X-Files) in "Early Rollout." The other CSIs, particularly the re-energized Grissom, will remain as married to their jobs as ever--although the latter's unspoken interest in Sara will be tested in "Butterflied." Other episodes of note include "Feeling the Heat," with Stacy Edwards and Arye Gross, "Jackpot," with Henry Czerny and Re-Animator's Jeffrey Combs, and the instantly infamous "Fur and Loathing," which was written by Jerry Stahl (Permanent Midnight) and centers on the death of a "furry." As Grissom explains to Willows, "furries" are a "tribe of people who prefer to interact as furry animals." Stahl also penned "Getting Off," about the death of a clown, and continues to come up with some of this still-groundbreaking series' most colorful scenarios. --Kathleen C. Fennessy Crime drama from the perspective of a Las Vegas forensic team. |

Tender Mercies List Price: $14.98 Sale Price: $7.15 Used From: $8.68 Average Rating: ![]() |

Sometimes everything comes together in a movie and it becomes something so much greater than the sum of its parts that it can only be described as a miracle. That's the case with Tender Mercies, a quietly luminous character piece about an alcoholic, washed-up country singer named Mac Sledge (Robert Duvall in an Oscar-winning performance) who hits bottom in a motel room one night and then slowly finds his way back into the land of the living with the help of the widow (Tess Harper) and her young son. It's a low-key, contemplative film that feels like a rural American family comedy in the vein of the great Japanese director, Yasujiro Ozu. Tender Mercies was directed by Australian Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy, Breaker Morant), written by Horton Foote (To Kill a Mockingbird), who won an Oscar for his screenplay, and has an unbeatable cast. This is one of Duvall's most intimate and deeply personal performances, matched only by his debut 14 years later as actor-writer-director in The Apostle. --Jim Emerson Down-and-out country singer Mac Sledge takes a second chance at life when he finds love with a widowed motel manager. |

Sweet Dreams List Price: $5.98 Sale Price: $3.50 Used From: $3.35 Average Rating: ![]() |

She wasn't a beauty queen, but country-music star Patsy Cline's voice was a thing of wonder: full-bodied, aching and dreamy at the same time. She came by the torchy emotions in her songs honestly, as shown in this biopic directed by Karel Reisz, rising from poor surroundings, literally forcing her talent on the Nashville establishment, all the while trying to survive an abusive marriage to a drinker. Though the script by Robert Getchell is standard Hollywood biography, the movie is more than watchable, thanks to a bone-deep performance by the always astonishing Jessica Lange and the counterpoint by Ed Harris as her loving but unreliable husband. The soundtrack features a basketful of Cline's hits, which Lange convincingly lip-synchs. --Marshall Fine A biographical film on the life of the late country singer Patsy Cline. |
