Even though one can view each segment of Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy on its own, it seems absurd to do so; why buy the slacks instead of the entire suit? Created by Kieslowski and his writing partner Krzysztof Piesiewicz for France's bicentennial, the titles--and the themes of the films--come from the three colors of the French flag representing liberty, equality, and fraternity. Blue examines liberation through the eyes of a woman (Juliette Binoche) who loses her husband and daughter in an auto accident, and solemnly starts anew. White is an ironic comedy about a befuddled Polish husband (Zbigniew Zamachowski) who takes an odd path of revenge against his ex-wife (Julie Delpy). A Swiss model (Irène Jacob) strikes up a friendship with a retired judge (Jean-Louis Trintignant) who eavesdrops on his neighbors in Red. The trilogy is a snapshot of European life at a time of reconstruction after the Cold War, reflected through Kieslowski's moralist view of human nature and illumined by each title's palate color. The DVD set has numerous extras spread throughout the three discs; the end result is a superior collection. Each disc has a short retrospective, culled together from new interviews with Kieslowski's crew, plus film critic Geoff Andrew, biographer Annette Insdorf (who also does the commentaries), and fellow Polish director Ageniska Holland. Producer Marin Karmitz also reminisces about the experience. There's an exceptional effort to show the magic of Kieslowski (who died two years after the trilogy) through a discussion of his various career phases, interviews with the three lead actresses, four student films, and archival materials including simple--and wonderful--glimpses of the director at work. Excellent insight is also provided by Dominique Rabourdin's filmed "cinema lessons" with Kieslowski. One of the cinema's great disappearing acts came to a close with the release of The Thin Red Line in late 1998. Terrence Malick, the cryptic recluse who withdrew from Hollywood visibility after the release of his visually enthralling masterpiece Days of Heaven (1978), returned to the director's chair after a 20-year coffee break. Malick's comeback vehicle is a fascinating choice: a wide-ranging adaptation of a World War II novel (filmed once before, in 1964) by James Jones. The battle for Guadalcanal Island gives Malick an opportunity to explore nothing less than the nature of life, death, God, and courage. Let that be a warning to anyone expecting a conventional war flick; Malick proves himself quite capable of mounting an exciting action sequence, but he's just as likely to meander into pure philosophical noodling--or simply let the camera contemplate the first steps of a newly birthed tropical bird, the sinister skulk of a crocodile. This is not especially an actors' movie--some faces go by so quickly they barely register--but the standouts are bold: Nick Nolte as a career-minded colonel, Elias Koteas as a deeply spiritual captain who tries to protect his men, Ben Chaplin as a G.I. haunted by lyrical memories of his wife. The backbone of the film is the ongoing discussion between a wry sergeant (Sean Penn) and an ethereal, almost holy private (newcomer Jim Caviezel). The picture's sprawl may be a result of Malick's method of "finding" a film during shooting and editing, and in some ways The Thin Red Line seems vaguely, intriguingly incomplete. Yet it casts a spell like almost nothing else of its time, and Malick's visionary images are a challenge and a signpost to the rest of his filmmaking generation. --Robert Horton

The sixth season of Entourage focuses on the title members rather than Vince (Adrian Grenier), the movie star they follow, which would have been a smart move had they been given more interesting story lines. Instead, Eric (Kevin Connolly) struggles with his startup agency and moons over his just-friends status with Sloan (Emmanuelle Chiriqui) while consoling himself with his needling neighbor Ashley (Alexis Dziena); Ari (Jeremy Piven) is gleefully hazing his assistant Lloyd (Rex Lee) for 100 days with the promise to make him a full agent should he survive; Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) enjoys a serious relationship with Jamie-Lynn Sigler (as herself) but tires of being seen as a hanger-on and decides to enroll in business school; Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon), is, as usual, sabotaging a good thing (a starring role in Ed Burns's NBC drama). For Vince, however, the biggest thing to happen to him the entire season is… his house gets robbed. Without a film for Vince to work on (after doing The Great Gatsby for Martin Scorsese, Vince's next film is delayed) and no deals to negotiate, the show gets away from its most interesting setting, rendering it weaker as a result. The celebrity guest stars, however, punctuate the season with great self-effacing cameos, notably David Schwimmer, who curses his way through a pitch meeting in which every project has a bumbling role for him; Tom Brady, who paints a picture-perfect domestic life with supermodel wife Gisele ("Just come over to the house. She cooks."); and Matt Damon, who angrily haggles Vince to donate to a charity fundraiser in the season finale. A sleazebag Bob Saget makes another appearance as himself, as do Bono, Steve Nash, LeBron James, and Jay Leno. Two so-so behind-the-scenes features and audio commentaries by the cast and crew round out the special features. --Ellen A. Kim

Explores the life of a young Los Angeles actor, his close group of friends, and his agent.

Though this irreverent animated series from Rooster Teeth Productions is inspired by the blockbuster Halo video game franchise, one doesn't need to be familiar with the game--or gaming in general--to appreciate Red vs. Blue's skewering of action tropes, military bravado, and science fiction in general. A prime example of the modern art form known as machinima (the use of video game graphics engines to create new animation), Red vs. Blue is also essentially a sitcom set in the eponymous Halo scenario, with two teams of soldiers in constant pursuit of each other's flag, yet completely unaware of the reason for the competition. Stuck in a repetitive and pointless scenario from which they appear to have no escape, the Red and Blue teams become embroiled in an absurdly elaborate game of one-upmanship that involves a Spanish-speaking robot who falls in love with a sentient, trigger-happy tank; a short-tempered talking bomb; frequent flashes backwards and forwards in time; an alien savior; and constant bouts of possession by various artificial intelligence. If this sounds like the densest chunk of science fiction ever presented, keep in mind that it's all delivered in rapid-fire bursts of snarky, slapstick humor over the course of 100 five-minute episodes; think a futuristic version of Stripes, not Dune. Since Red vs. Blue was created for web broadcast using the Halo engine, image and quality tends to be somewhat low resolution, but picture-perfect visuals aren't what fans are expecting with this five-disc set. Rather, it's the chance to have the entire series run in one set, along with an impressive collection of extras. Chief among the latter are multiple audio commentaries from the cast and crew for each season (all have been featured on previous releases), including a new anniversary commentary recorded for this set. Two special productions--the Xbox Live miniseries Out of Mind and Recovery One--are also a highlight, as are a barrage of special videos, including the show's hilarious public service announcements, voice-over outtakes (many of which have been deliberately flubbed), and deleted scenes. Faux DVD menu content, including fake FBI warnings and nonsensical language options, is evidence of the appreciation for the show's fans that went into this set, as is a new sixth disc of rarities, including early dialogue recordings, award-show footage, and even a version of the series executed completely with Legos. It's hard to imagine a show that plays on paper like Red vs. Blue deserving such a deluxe presentation, but the sheer quality of the imaginations behind the program clearly warrant this impressive set. --Paul Gaita

No other show captures the ebb and flow of day-to-day human relationships like Six Feet Under, which chronicles the dysfunctional lives of the Fisher family, who run a funeral home in Los Angeles. Though the overt theme of the series is mortality--every episode opens with the death of someone whose body will end up on the Fishers' slab--but the third season, even moreso than the first two, explores the intertwining struggles for connection and for personal freedom. The season starts slowly but compellingly, laying out the changes in the Fishers' lives. Nate (Peter Krause, We Don't Live Here Anymore) has married and has a baby. David (Michael C. Hall) is settling into tense domesticity with his angry boyfriend. Claire (Lauren Ambrose) has launched into art school. Ruth (Frances Conroy), their mother, is reaching out for companionship from an emotionally stilted young intern, and Brenda (Rachel Griffiths, Hilary and Jackie), Nate's ex-fiancee, has apparently vanished from their lives. But as storylines unfold across the 13 episodes, the emotional heft of the season comes from the expanded roles of the family's intimates. Federico (Freddy Rodriguez), who has leveraged his way into a partnership with the Fisher brothers, finds himself fighting to be treated as an equal at work and struggling with his wife's depression at home. Trying to sort out their relationship, David and Keith (Mathew St. Patrick) negotiate everything from therapy to threesomes. Meanwhile Lisa (Lili Taylor, I Shot Andy Warhol), Nate's unhappy wife, increasingly becomes the center of the season as her jealousy and need become unbearable. Though big events happen, the most jolting drama on Six Feet Under comes from small conflicts--miscommunications, crossed desires, habits that don't mesh. The cast, writers, and directors can, with breathtaking skill and subtlety, spin a brief conversation into a microcosm of the character's lives. By this third season, the show has taken on the richness and complexity of a great novel; it's an impressive and deeply enjoyable achievement. --Bret Fetzer
